The Caravaggio Ensemble presents three 17th-century dramas: Purcell’s short oratorio “The Witch of Endor” depicts the sombre encounter between King Saul and the witch of Endor, who prophesies his death. Giovanni Battista Ferrandini’s ‘Il Pianto di Maria’ is a moving musical setting of Mary’s lament at the foot of the cross. Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s ‘Le Reniement de Saint-Pierre’ recounts Peter’s threefold denial during Jesus’ arrest.
The three works come together to form a dense panorama of human abysses and divine dramas. They reflect Christian tenets of faith and diabolical imaginations that, stemming from biblical tradition, circulated across national borders.
