Purcell: The Fairy Queen
What better ensemble than “Les Arts Florissants” to bring Purcell’s The Fairy Queen to life, echoing the “Journées des Plantes” in Chantilly. Under the direction of William Christie, this work, undoubtedly one of the pinnacles of English musical theater, is the kind of event one regrets missing for a long time. Inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, this semi-opera opens up a world of wonder and desire where arias and choruses move the audience with their direct beauty, tenderness, and nocturnal radiance. Masks, dances, and sung scenes come together to form a free-flowing, sensual, and deeply human tapestry, brought to life by impeccable “Christie-style” voices that will linger long in the ear and the memory.

Handel/Mozart: Acis and Galatea
Éclairé sur Bach et Haendel par le très averti baron Van Swieten, Mozart adapte Acis et Galatée en 1788. Une pastorale d’inspiration mythologique dont Les Arts Florissants sont familiers de longue date et dont ils ont livré un enregistrement de référence.
À peine trente ans après sa mort, Haendel appartient déjà au passé. Le mécène et collectionneur Van Swieten s’attache, à Vienne, à le détourner de l’oubli qui guette sa musique en la faisant découvrir, jouer et adapter par des musiciens de son temps. C’est ainsi que Mozart, dont l’engouement pour Bach et Haendel laissera son empreinte sur de nombreuses œuvres, redevable, comme Haendel, de la vocalité italienne, en propose cette relecture en allemand.
Tirée des Métamorphoses d’Ovide, l’ode pastorale relate les amours d’Acis et de Galatée entravées par Polyphème, dont les avances sont rejetées par la nymphe. Le cyclope met le jeune berger au défi, puis à mort. Éplorée, Galatée lui redonne vie sous la forme d’une fontaine aux flots éternels.

Schlather at the helm.
Following a string of Olivier nominated and Olivier Award winning collaborations, the Irish Baroque Orchestra returns to perform with INOas well as Luail – Ireland’s National Dance Company for this bold new staging of Rameau’s final opera. After the nationwide tour Les Boréades will travel to London, as the first Rameau opera ever staged at London’s Royal Opera House.

Historæ Sacræ
The Caravaggio Ensemble presents three 17th-century dramas: Purcell’s short oratorio The Witch of Endor depicts the sombre encounter between King Saul and the witch of Endor, who prophesies his death. Giovanni Battista Ferrandini’s ‘Il Pianto di Maria’ is a moving musical setting of Mary’s lament at the foot of the cross. Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s ‘Le Reniement de Saint-Pierre’ recounts Peter’s threefold denial during Jesus’ arrest.
The three works come together to form a dense panorama of human abysses and divine dramas. They reflect Christian tenets of faith and diabolical imaginations that, stemming from biblical tradition, circulated across national borders.
